Digital Sovereignty and Self Determination

Digital Sovereignty and Self Determination

Digital sovereignty describes the capacity to own, govern, and protect your digital presence rather than having it controlled by outside forces—big tech companies, governments, or algorithms you didn’t choose.

It includes:

  • Control over personal data
  • Freedom to choose digital tools without coercion
  • Transparent rules for how information is used
  • Protection from surveillance or exploitation
  • The ability to build and govern your own digital communities

For communities, especially rural or marginalized ones, digital sovereignty is also about equitable accessrepresentation, and self-determination in digital spaces.
